Perennials, 50-100+ cm (tubers 2-10 cm). Leaves mostly alternate, sometimes proximal opposite; blades linear to linear-lanceolate, the larger 2-7 cm × 3-7 mm. Involucres hemispheric, 10-12 × 12-20 mm. Paleae 10 × 2 mm (lateral lobes nearly equaling central lobe). Phyllaries appressed. Ray laminae 20-40 mm. Disc florets 50+; corollas 5-7 mm. Cypselae 3.5-4.5 mm; pappi 0 or of 1(-2) lacerate scales 0.4-2 mm plus 0-2 scales 0.2-0.5 mm. 2n = 68. Flowering Mar-Nov. Sandhills, pine flatwoods; 10-30+ m; Fla. Phoebanthus grandiflorus is known only from peninsular Florida.
