Plants 15-30 cm. Stems villous or tomentose, ± woolly, sparsely glandular-stipitate. Leaves: basal blades lanceolate, 50-100(-150) × 8-15(-40) mm, margins coarsely serrate, faces softly villous, tomentose, stipitate-glandular. Heads 1-4. Involucres 8-10 × 12-15 mm. Phyllaries appressed, unequal, bases chartaceous, apices green. Flowering Jun-Aug. Dry meadows, pine forests, brushy slopes; 1600-2200 m; Calif., Idaho, Oreg., Utah. Variety lanulosa is recognized by its woolly pubescence and unequal phyllaries.
