Plants 4.5-13.6 cm. Leaves: basal orbiculate to broadly elliptic, bases attenuated to winged petioles, margins distinctly crenate; cauline 2-7, 20-60 × 8-12 mm. Phyllaries: shortest 2.1-3.1 mm. Disc florets: corollas 4.2-5.4 mm. 2n = 18. Flowering Jul-Aug. Gravelly soils, alpine meadows, gravel slopes; 2000-3000+ m; B.C.; Oreg., Wash. Variety nana is mainly confined to peaks of the Cascade Mountains in Oregon and Washington, and very rarely on central Vancouver Island, British Columbia.
