Basal leaves (1-)3-nerved, linear to narrowly spatulate, 2-10 mm. Heads 10-110+ in corymbiform arrays. Involucres: staminate 4-5.5 mm; pistillate 5-6.5 mm. Phyllaries proximally golden brown, distally white. Corollas: staminate 3-4 mm; pistillate 2.5-4 mm. Cypselae 1-2 mm, sparingly papillate; pappi: staminate 3-4.5 mm; pistillate 3-4 mm. Flowering summer. Semidry meadows and drainages, lower montane, ponderosa pine zone; 900-3200 m; Alta., B.C.; Calif., Colo., Idaho, Mont., Nev., Oreg., S.Dak., Utah, Wash., Wyo. Subspecies luzuloides is characterized by non-stoloniferous habit and relatively small heads in corymbiform arrays.
