Leaf blades hairy. Flowers: sepals red; stamens 0.9-1 times as long as petals. Flowering Dec-Mar. Chaparral, woodlands; 100-1700 m; Calif. Variety hesperium occurs in the Transverse and Peninsular ranges and the San Gabriel Mountains.
